Welcome Back To School!

“I wanna go to college for the rest of my life” – Asher Roth

Although we know (and hope) you don’t share Asher Roth’s sentiments about college, we hope that you are excited about starting off the school year the right way.

To share our tips for a successful school year, we at The LI$T want to encourage you to stay on TOPIC. TOPIC consists of: Time management, Organization, Professional experience, Involvement, and Class.

1. Time Management

Get a day planner or a personal calendar to properly manage your time. Everything from lectures, to labs, to career fairs, to personal events, it is important to know what your calendar looks like. Knowing what you have completed and what you have yet to complete can save you a lot of heartache when things get hectic once the school year is underway.

2. Organization

Color coding (yes, this sounds girly but it is helpful) can help sort out your activities/assignments in your planner. Categories include: classes, tasks, and personal activities.

3. Professional Experience

The beginning of the semester is a good time to check when Major/School-wide career fairs and corporate information sessions will take place. Get your resume ready – update your experience from your summer internship/co-op by visiting Career Services. Plan to interview when you’re not worried about midterms/finals so you know you’re focused.

4. Involvement

Although we feel that social and professional organizations are vital to the college experience, try not to sign up for too many leadership positions! Pick one organization that you will take an active role in and wait until the next term before making other commitments.

5. Class

After you finalize your schedule, take the syllabus your professor provided for each class and map out when assignments are due and when your tests/midterms/finals are. Then make a note of each professor’s office hours and visit them during the first week of school. You should plan to visit those office hours periodically throughout the semester.

We wish you the best of luck during your fall semester! Let us know, via email or comment, if there are any topics that we can focus on to help you smoothly transition into this coming school year. We are here to help YOU be successful!
